Nilima: Exploring the convergence of Film & Mohiniyattam

Dance and film are natural allies. The beauty of movement, music, lyrics and emotion can be communicated, transmitted and saved for posterity with great felicity using the medium of film. Arguably one of the first dance films based on Mohiniyattam, “Nilima”, is Kalashree Ayswaria Wariar’s debut as a film director and producer. As an accomplished Mohiniyattam artiste she choreographed and brought to life on stage an enchanting poem (Nilima) by late V.Madhavan Nair “Mali” (author of over 50 books and the classic Kathakali, Karnasapatham). Converting Nilima into a film was the logical and indeed, natural, extension of its ethereal beauty. The short film, 'Nilima- beyond the blue.. an exploration', is a profound and sublime travel of spiritual ideals through the dance style of Mohiniyattam. (Trailer "Nilima")

Ayswaria Warrier is a noted Mohiniyattam artist basically from Kerala settled in Vadodara, Gujarath . She runs her own Classical dance institute Nrityodaya School of Classical Dance at Vadodara through which she imparts training in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. Ayswaria has performed in many stages in India and abroad and has done several choreographies.

The screening of 'Nilima- Beyond the Blue... An Exploration...' will be conducted at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 13th December 2017. Apart from film screening, there will be Mohiniyattam recital by Ayswaria Wariar and discussion on the Convergence of Film & Mohiniyattam.
